Cold process soap making is a technique of creating soap by mixing oils such as olive, coconut, and palm with an alkali, which is commonly sodium hydroxide or lye. This process triggers a chemical reaction called saponification, whereby the oils undergo a structural change through the reaction with the lye, resulting in the formation of a solid bar of soap. The term “cold process” refers to the fact that no external heat source is required for this chemical reaction to occur.
Most commercial soap bars available in stores do not actually qualify as ‘soap’, and are instead categorized as detergents due to the absence of natural saponification benefits. This is because the manufacturers tend to substitute the natural ingredients with synthetic lathering agents and harsh chemicals.
